Project Overview

The Solarpack project is...

  • A repository of 1400+ pre-compiled packages of free software for Solaris systems;
  • A distribution of the NetBSD package collection tools (NPCT) for Solaris.
  • The home of the Zounds package manager;

Getting started

The complete information on how to install NPCT is in the NPCT HOWTO.
Once NPCT is installed, you can start installing packages present in the package listing.

Project motivation

As users of Solaris and Linux, we are disappointed by how scattered are the efforts around the management of free tools for Solaris.

This situation leads to a lot of re-dos, patching and loss of time for many of us trying to set-up a software environment on Solaris.

Our aim in this project is to set-up a large, collaborative and unified effort to build and distribute free software packages for Solaris.

Our first goal is to create an actively supported and maintained set of tools, allowing automated "get & install" of up-to-date software. This will be possible thanks to a centralized point of development, regrouping and extending already existing efforts such as sunfreeware.com or Philip Brown's.

Potentially we could continue by setting up a more elaborate and complete "solaris distribution" with releases and dependencies like in linux distributions, and "JumpStart" profiles to simplify the downloads and installations.

Considering the scattered tools we found on numerous web sites, we think that folks already developing and maintaining those tools are very knowledgeable contributors that could make such a collaborative effort a success in a short term.
